Hello Ted. I am thrilled to have found this site. I am a new subscriber and literally just started using it.
I just passed my exam. I have been offered an Independent Agent position with an Independent Insurance Agency in the area. He has offered me a small percentage to increase as the number of policies I sell increases. Clearly, whatever I sell, he will make commission on also. Yes?
For some reason, I am suddenly confused. Do I have to work through someone else or can I apply for appointment with different Insurers to sell their products on my own? If so, is there a commission structure with the companies directly that offers me this structure or would it be a much better structure.
Thank you in advance for your advice. (Watch for your answer in comments box--Ted)

Thank you Ted,
I have my life and health license, as well as my property and casualty license for Ohio. I am looking at becoming a captive agent but I did not expect a request for a Business Action Plan. Can you give me some guidance on where to find information on how to construct one for this industry?
Thank you,
Richard

Hi Ted
Can an agent be successful today by specializing in selling life insurance only?or must the agent be versed in all of the many products available today such as annuities, auto, home, health,
mutual funds, retirement planning? Its a pretty daunting task to learn all of those areas.

I would be provided errors and omissions ins and given access to the companies. It's up to me to get licensed, and then I'll be trained. However, each of the carriers provide company/product specific training. Commission on 85% on new business and 60% on renewal. There is potential for bonus based upon production. There is no training salary, no benefits, and I pay my own taxes. Good deal? Thoughts?

Dear Ted, hope your day is well.
I'm one of your e-newsletter subscribers and have been enjoying from your great insights. I'm a financial consultant in Toronto, Ontario and I have both licenses for mutual fund and life insurance. Since I'm currently compensated by commission, I found it in a lot of times I have been providing consultation service to my clients, but could not get compensated unless they are making purchases. I'm considering to charge my clients by hourly rate, and if they do need me to manage their investments or setup an insurance policy, I will reimburse their fee. (Given that the asset size has met my pre-set minimum.)
May I know what's your view in this?
Thanks for your time.
Best Regards,
Samuel
